Mathematics

Aim

The aim of the Mathematics faculty at Arndell Anglican College, is to develop students’ mathematical thinking, understanding, competence and confidence in the application of mathematics. We also our aim to develop their creativity and appreciation of the subject, and ensure their engagement in and enjoyment of independent lifelong learning.

It is also important;

Years 7 to 10 (Stages 4 and 5)

Mathematics is a mandatory course to be studied in each of years 7 – 10, with at least 400 hours to be completed by the end of Year 10.

Course Description

Mathematics is used to identify, describe and apply patterns and relationships.  It provides a precise means of communication, and is a powerful tool for solving problems in real life situations.   In addition to its practical applications, the study of mathematics is a rewarding pursuit in its own right, providing opportunities for discovery, challenge and relaxation.

What will students learn about?

Students will study Number Theory, Patterns and Algebra, Data, Measurement, Space and Geometry.  Within each of these strands, they will cover a range of topics including:

Percentages Consumer Arithmetic
Decimals Probability
Perimeter Algebraic Techniques
Area Coordinate Geometry
Surface Area and Volume Graphing and Interpreting Data
Properties of Solids Fractions
Geometrical Figures Deductive Geometry
Trigonometry

What will students learn to do?

Students learn to ask questions in relation to mathematical situations and their mathematical experiences; to develop, select and use a range of strategies, including the use of technology, to explore and solve problems;  to develop and use appropriate language and representations to communicate mathematical ideas;  to develop and use processes for exploring relationships, checking solutions and giving reasons to support their conclusions;  and to make connections between their existing knowledge and understanding and the use of mathematics in the real world.

School Certificate

Satisfactory completion of the mandatory study of Mathematics during Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10), will be recorded with a grade on the student’s School Certificate.

Year 11 and 12 (Stage 6)

In Stage 6 students can choose from the Board of Studies courses of General Mathematics, Mathematics, Extension 1 and Extension 2 Mathematics (Year 12 only).
These courses are designed to prepare students for the workforce, or for further education at a Tertiary level.  Students are advised to carefully select the correct course, that would best suit them in their further endeavours.

Student Support

A student support system of teachers exists within the school, where students who may be finding difficulty coping with mathematics are given individual assistance during class.
In addition, Mathematics teachers have organized tutorial lessons outside of their normal teaching time, to give personalised assistance to students who require help with any areas of mathematics.

Extra Curricular

Students who exhibit an aptitude for mathematics, will be entered into the Australian Mathematics competition held throughout Australia in July of each year. Students will also be encouraged to participate in one of the mathematical enrichment programs, organised by the Australian Mathematics Trust at the University of Canberra.
