Languages
Why learn another language?
Learning a foreign language means stepping into a whole new world of experience. As young people have limited chances to mix with other cultures or to travel, learning a language through school is an important way of growing in understanding and openness to the wider world.
As we now live in a global village, knowing how to communicate in another language is an essential life skill. Our students are equipped with enough French to begin travelling and functioning in foreign countries, and are significantly aware of how to go about learning any language they may need in future.
Why French?
At Arndell the Language Other Than English taught is French, which is the second most widely taught language in the world (after English). French is the or an official language in 33 countries of the world, so it is very useful for travelling.
How do we teach French?
Communication is the goal of using language, so we focus on a communicative approach in our classes. We also teach an appreciation for the French culture and discover the many ways it has influenced our own. While there is not a grammatical focus, in learning to use the language correctly students find out about the structures of language. Research shows this is helpful for increasing literacy in our first language as well.
Who studies French?
At Arndell French is taught in years 3-8 (beginners level – compulsory) and as an elective in years 9-10. We also teach HSC level French for beginners and continuers. Those studying French in years 9-11 have the opportunity to go to New Caledonia on our French tour and experience the language in real life, everyday use.
Who teaches French?
Our staff are Mrs Angela Webb (HOD) and Miss Carolyn Turner.
